Creasing

The Ultimate Remedy to Cracking; Creasing Prior to Folding...to be sure!

When designing a brochure for printing consideration must be given for content, layout and design, paper stock selection etc. and last but not least finishing.  Proper planning and effort can turn out a beautiful print run.  But when the incorrect tools or procedures are used to produce the proper finish a beautiful print run can turn ugly!

A common occurrence when folding today’s digitally printed brochures is cracking at the fold.  Paper or image cracking when folding can occur for a number of reasons; folding against the paper grain, fusing of the toner image weakens at the fold, the type and weight of the paper stock and moisture content of the paper stock.

Eliminating cracking by attempting to control some these variables can be difficult or when a combination of these variables are present it can be impossible.  There are some remedies to help prevent cracking when folding but they will limit your paper stock type and weight choices.

You might try laying out your brochures so that the fold occurs with the paper grain, this can eliminate paper cracking.  However, even if you fold with the paper grain and there is printed image at the fold; the image can crack.  Toner images are heat fused onto the paper consequently the image is laying on the surface of the paper and not absorbed into the paper.  The heat fusing process produces a very durable adhesion of the toner image onto the paper surface and usually does not smudge or rub off however folding can weaken this adhesion.  You may try not to have printed image where the fold will occur on your brochure.  If a heavier weight paper stock is chosen you might try (if you have a scoring machine) scoring the stock at the fold position prior to folding; this will reduce paper fiber cracking.  However if there is printed image at the fold position you may still get cracking.  Traditional rotary scoring machines have a tendency to “plow” through the paper, additionally the rotary action creates friction as the paper passes through resulting in a weakening of adhesion of the heat fused image.

Crease It To Be Sure!

Creasing unlike scoring compresses both the paper and the image.  Utilizing a blade and matrix  device that spans the width of the sheet it produces a perfect crease in one swift action.  When folded at the crease there is no cracking, just a clean crisp fold, producing a beautifully printed brochure with a perfect finish!
